It is no surprise that people, communities, and countries that leverage the importance of writing workshops not only produce good writers and best-selling books, but also go on to win prestigious literary awards. However, most writing and creative skill acquisition happens in more organised and formal settings, like universities and other special schools that charge high fees. This is seemingly why there are fewer writing workshops in Nigeria and Africa. Furthermore, writing can be an isolating endeavour for some people, and the writing process can be taxing as well. So, most writers need all the support they can get through their creative journey.
In recognition of this, Naira Publishers believes in the talent, creativity, skills, and learning processes that make a writer a good writer. We believe that the basic creative and writing skills that most writers need to write good books and stories can be taught in less formal and more interactive settings. Hence, the reason we instituted a writing workshop to train and expose writers to the necessary skills they need to master the writing craft. Our workshops are creative laboratories that are open to writers of all levels — novices, intermediates, and professionals — with the aim of enhancing their understanding of the craft and the literary ecosystem.
Our workshops are either conducted virtually (online) or physically (onsite). Our online workshops allow writers, anywhere in the world, to participate. They cover fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, creative essay, news writing, and long-form journalism. On the other hand, our onsite workshops are held for a couple of days at specific locations. Whether online or onsite, our workshops are facilitated by good editors, published authors, and other experienced creative teachers.
We leverage the generative format, where writers practice using writing prompts, producing fresh writing on the spot, and the workshop format, where the actual teaching and training take place. Through our workshops, writers accelerate the development of their writing skills, build confidence and motivation, receive constructive criticism and inspiration, gain professional insights from industry insiders, and access resources and networks that can help their publishing and career growth.
Online Workshops
Our online workshops are mainly genre-based; that is, they focus on one specific genre per session, and they are held two times a year — in February and November. The schedule and duration of the online workshop (six days) are the same and are as follows:
First and second weeks of the month of the scheduled online workshop: Prose, Poetry, and Drama
Third and fourth weeks of the month of the scheduled online workshop: Creative Essay, News Reporting, and Long-form Journalism
Onsite Workshops
Our onsite workshops are intensive and cover many genres of creative writing. They are held annually — every third week of June.
Our writing workshops are open to everyone, and we encourage people and organisations to support our cause. Your financial support is the lifeblood of our activities and progress.
