It is perceived that the passion for reading and the reading culture among Nigerians, including young people and basic school students, are declining. In line with the maxims “A reader is a leader” and “Books are the easiest way to tour the world”, books and the reading culture must be encouraged in our schools for sustainable cultural, intellectual, and economic development.
In light of this, Naira Publishers has taken the initiative to encourage young Nigerians and students to read by instituting the School Reading Project, aimed at fostering the creative, writing, and reading culture in secondary schools across Nigeria. Our reading project treats reading not just as an academic exercise but also as an extracurricular engagement that balances learning and creative freedom and challenges students to push beyond basic comprehension in fun and memorable ways
Every last Friday of every month, we visit a secondary school and engage the students with reading and writing exercises. These exercises go a long way in shaping their academics and also how they perceive the creative process and industry.
Our School Reading Project aims to transform passive reading among students and young people into an active learning experience, encourage them to engage deeply with books and the creative process, and develop a love for books and literature, all towards enhancing their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, with the project, we aim to support schools to form book clubs for their students, teach them basic writing skills, and expose them to the opportunities in the creative industry.
